It was a long time ago now when I had my first cigarette- 38 years ago.
I am now 60. I have been a non-smoker for the past three years.10 years
ago I lost my lower legs because of smoking. I still smoked for seven
more years. Maybe I am getting older but I have gotten wiser as well.
Back in my youth smoking was very common. My parents and friends of
of my parents, cousins everyone seemed to smoke. No one seemed to complain.
Today it is different but very similar – the dangers are the same. The
knowledge is better – but the communication lessened. What I am
saying communication has lessened – impossible. One positive is that
there are fewer smokers than before – percentage wise. It is estimated
that 35-40% of Americans and Canadians still smoke. Are you aware
of the fact that 443,000 Americans and 45,000 Canadians die each and
every year from smoking related illnesses.
It is not impossible to see that communication has lessened. I will
give a couple of typical lessons to show my point.
A. I had a friend at the time he was 50 and I was 48. Both of us smoked
like crazy. He died from complications of his prostate operation. Or more
clearly spoken – from Cancer caused by smoking. It was through out
his body when he died. He was a massive man and I miss him a lot.
The doctors failed to communicate the real problem to my friend.
B. I had another acquaintance who also died from smoking related
causes. He died in a head -on collision with a trucker. They had a
videotape in the cab of the truck driver that showed he was lighting
a cigarette with his head down while his car swerved into the
middle lane. That was wicked to see. But it was not communicated
through the newspapers as to why it happened. More terrible
communication.
To Counteract these stories the good news is that there is a social
movement in place – Smokers are now being looked as a weak versus
strong – slutty versus sleek and sophisticated. I am hoping that the
revolution eventually sinks in with the kids Kids that are 13 14 15…
young teenagers Because it is still prevalent with the young people.
Personally I plan to communicate this message until all smokers
get it right. - Stop Smoking Now! Before it is Too Late!
I unfortunately I am speaking from experience.
