Hi - My full name is James Thomas Creech.
My date of birth was September 2, 1949 I just turned the big 60.
The nickname 'The Creecher' started very early on smply because of my last name.
So who is the Creecher? I have an interesting life. Ups and downs? You bet.
Sickness and health? You bet..
Let's first deal with the Ups and Downs.
At the top of my career I was:
- a part owner of a Chysler dealership - Always had two demo vehicles. every other month
- fully owned two substantial commercial properties - One was making $7.500 each month.
- Owned a substantial Chartered Accounting practice earning about $150,000 per year.
- Had a beautiful cottage on Lake Talon with a $75,000 mortgage on it. Today's value estimated $500,000
- Owned a nice home in North Bay. Value estimated $300,000 with a $50,000 mortgage on it
Then I got Greedy. How?
I decided with a friend of mine to build another building on MainSteet North Bay.
We were approached by a group who were looking for a location for a bowling centre. They even take all of the second floor of the building.
That was the biggest mistake of my life. Renting to that damned bowling centre group.
Well I ended up owning the bowling centre and then decided to expand it as well so we built a ten pin centre on the first level. No one in North Bay was prepared to operate a ten pin centre there were very few customers and even fewer nice people who bowled ten pin in North Bay.
I thought I had read that people bowled in good times and bad. Wrong.
The recession hit. Everything crumbled from there on. I was losing at least $15,000-$20,000 per month on the bowling centre. I mortgaged my house and my cottage to get more money.
I gave up which I know now I should not have done.
I went the easy way - I went bankrupt.
Lost everything. Except my cottage. I sold it to a friend who agreed to sell it back to me at no profit other than the typical interest rate charged. I did buy it back for $160,000 which meant I had a $140,000 mortgage on it.. And right now my wife owns the cottage and she is still angry with me about the size of the mortgage. The cottage is now worth $550,000 and there is a $150,000 mortgge on it.
At one time I had a positive net worth of over $3,000,000. Not anymore.I lost everything! Even the cottage which my wife now owns,
That is my up and down story.
Now let's talk about In Sickness and Health?
When I was healthy. I played hocky at university and pitched baseball for the best team in South Western Ontario. I was not yet big enough to attract he necesary scouts in hockey but I was asked by the Pittsburg Pirates to attend one of their training camps
I was an athlete while I was smoking. In fact I was an athlete during the construction of my cottage. I actually built a lot of it myself. I did all of the cedar outside siding and also a lot of the interior work as well.
Well that was about as up and I can say about my health. Now to the down part.
I never thought about my health until 1985 when I had a sight tightening in my chest and my jaw and I thought this was crazy to go to the hospital about it. But I did.
It was discvered that I had an angina attack and that is was advisable to have an angioplasty done since one of my artieries was 95% closed and aother one was 75% closed. Not one Doctor during this period had ever suggested that smoking was the main cause nor did anyone suggest I stop smoking.
In 2001 I had another issue with my health. I developed a tiny lump in my left big toe. Let's just go the the end of this scenario from that one tiny lump I developed gangrene on both my feet so bad that it was suggested I cut my lower legs off. In the end I begged them to cut them off. The pain was excruciating. I couldn't stand it. Once again no one had told me that you could lose your legs because of smoking. But I did.
It is not fun having no legs. I suffered from chronic stump pain. No one knows why. I used my prostheses about 40% only of my waking life. The rest was in a wheelchair.
A couple of years later I had a minor heart attack and it has been determined that I suffer from congestive heart failure. Neither of these problems will kill me.They said I am lucky. Bullshit I said.
Once again I smoked for seven more years and it has only been recently that it has been told to me by my son who is now a doctor that smoking was most likely the cause of all of my problems and that I should stop smoking. Too late I used to say.
During the seven years I tried everything to stop smoking. I studied it earnestly and I am now an expert about stopping smoking.
Because of my health problems I have spent the last three years, after I finally stopped smoking for good, helping smokers to avoid the problems I have had.
The bottom line is this - I have never been so grateful and happy in my entire life more than I have felt during these past three years. Stopping smoking provides a regenerative feeling. I feel better now than ever before. My legs are still a problem but only a slight problem now. My stump pain has disappeared.
